Increase County sales tax?

Orange County is well known as a place that values education and put our money where our mouth is. The County Commissioners have worked hard this year to hold the line on taxes and pending, but progress demands, well, progress. Advocates for the schools are clearly in support of a tax increase.

So having tried to pass a real estate transfer tax, and in the face of a slightly-more-rabid-than usual anti-tax crowd, the Commissioners are now considering a sales tax.

Orange County Human Relation goals

According to this morning's Herald-Sun, the Orange County "Board of Commissioners is one of the first government bodies in the nation to seek to define social justice and make it a backdrop for its decisions." The Human Relations Advisory Board presented a draft of their document to the BoCC on May 13. The full document is available at: http://www.co.orange.nc.us/OCCLERKS/1005131.pdf

For those who don't have time to read the full document, here's the bare bones.

In working to seek social justice, Orange County shall perform government duties including policy-making and budgeting with the express objectives of:

1. Striving for the elimination of oppression and inequity by creating an environment of equal opportunity in which no groups are targeted for harassment, exclusion, intimidation or violence.

Marshall Defeats Burr, NC Has Two Democratic Senators

A blog entry on the NC senate race may be a bit outside the scope for the OP but I have been so encouraged by the recent polling data showing both Marshall and Cunningham in statistical ties with Burr and with low approval rating for Burr thatI was inspired to write this entry. The title is just vision for a newspaper headline on an enjoyable Wednesday morning next November.

I personally have been supporting Elain Marshall since the day she announced and think she will be a great senator for NC. I recently recieved an e-mail from her campaign lamenting that Cal Cunningham did not drop out. I think there may be an upside from the run off in that it will generate extra local and national press coverage. It reminds me a bit of the discussion of the Clinton-Obama primary contest. Many people were calling for Clinton to drop out so that Obama could focus on November. However, the primary contest generated a lot of interest and in the end, Obama won.

Any Chance of a Reasoned, Civil Dialogue?

I'm a big supporter of the IFC and its mission. And I support its desire to create a new type of facility, a transitional facility for homeless men and the need to relocate somewhere. And I'm disappointed that there is opposition to the proposed site for that new facility. But I also think that the dialogue has gone beyond civility and that the neighborhoods adjoining the proposed site are being unfairly demonized. In the 12 years I have served on Town advisory boards I have seen many neighborhoods oppose many projects for many different reasons - some good, some bad, some rational, some irrational.

Mark Peters has his eye on you

Hey Mark, what's all this business about you making UNC's Director of Local Relations hand over her contact list? All you're going to find out is who wants to know what UNC is doing, in other words: everyone.

I understand you've also asked the Town of Chapel Hill to share all official e-mail regarding relocating the homeless shelter. I can kind of imagine what you're trying to get at there, but I doubt you'll find anything useful. So maybe Mayor Foy and the Chancellor Moeser made some kind of arrangement to transfer this land, that's already publicly apparent. What does that prove? How will that help your neighbors' cause to keep the Interfaith Council's Community House out of the neighborhood? It almost seems like you want to intimidate public officials, Mark. I'm not sure why.
